Dental Extractions

The primary goal of aftercare following a tooth extraction is to protect the forming blood clot, control any minor bleeding, and ensure the extraction site heals without complications.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the best way to recover? Take it easy for the first day, keep your head propped up with pillows, and avoid disturbing the area with your tongue or fingers.

  • Should I use mouthwash or rinse? No. Avoid all rinsing and spitting for the first 24 hours to prevent dislodging the protective clot.

  • What activities or habits should I pause? Refrain from drinking alcohol, smoking, or consuming hot foods while the area is still numb. Avoid chewing on the side of the extraction.

  • When is it necessary to call the clinic? You should reach out if bleeding is heavy and won't stop, if your pain levels increase significantly after the first day, or if you notice major swelling.

Normal Post-Op Symptoms

  • Minor oozing immediately following the procedure

  • General tenderness or dull aching as the anaesthetic wears off

  • Mild, localised swelling around the extraction site

  • Small amounts of food trapping (be gentle when cleaning nearby)

Advice:

While some discomfort is expected, it should gradually improve. If you experience persistent bleeding that does not settle with pressure, or if pain worsens after 24 hours, please contact us for advice.
